So, I took a new job to try and increase my skill sets. I forgot about challenges and issues. I just approached it like I do everything else. With an iron hard will and an ability to read. However learning a Novell system is a bit more challenging than that.It was a very frustrating day for me personally, and I really don’t have many of those. Being an Ubuntu evangelist and troubleshooter has taught me some valuable lessons on patience. I think one of the things that really makes me angry is when you attempt some hack to make something in Linux work, and you go to the forums to post about your problem, and some jerk (I am refraining from using the word I really want to use.) says something remarkably intuitive and brilliant like, ‘Oh really? Works on my system’. Ya, like that does anyone alot of good! I understand that some people should probably not be attempting certain technological acrobatics, but come on, if you don’t have anything intelligent to say…..
So, I get to my new job, I can’t log onto the network, I can’t get my remote desktop utility from Ubuntu working, I can’t even get in and edit a web page!!! Novell is denying me access all over the place, and console one won’t install. I find out that console one is only packaged in ‘rpms’ instead of my Ubuntu specific ‘deb’ package manager, and installing ‘Alien’ to convert my newly downloaded Novel rpm’s into Ubuntu understandable ‘deb’s. No dice, the install proceeds but then craps out due to configuration file errors. Blah, blah, blah, the list goes on. Every work around and hack I try basically falls to pieces. So frustrated with my tail allegorically tucked, I go home. Perhaps after some sleep and some much needed reading I can make a better attempt in the morning.
Take heart dear friends, if you ever feel like hurling your system across the parking lot…..you’re not alone.
